The London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival 2011
According to both legend and history, it is said that the Dragon Boat Festival originated in ancient southern central China some 2,500 years ago along the banks of Yangtze River, around the same era when the Olympic Games commences in Greece. The Dragon Boat race is now one of the most popular water sport both in China and overseas.
Over a decade ago, London Chinatown Lions Club organised the first Dragon Boat Festival in the London Docklands as a fund raising event to raise funds for the Chinese Schools around the M25 area. The festival moved from the Isle of Dogs to the present venue the London Regatta Centre in 2007 with the sponsorship of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office and since has developed into a major cultural event. It is now a well established feature in the London calendar.
The Festival provides an excellent opportunity for everyone to share our Chinese culture and traditions, supported by many local businesses, communities, organisations as well as international businesses. It provides a unique networking and ‘team building’ opportunities to use the day as a corporate event day.
The participation in the Dragon Boat racing is not just open to those who have had previous racing experience. Everyone is encouraged to put forward a team and participate. There will be numerous participation packages available to suit most requirements from charitable organisations to corporate packages.
A Dragon Boat team consists of 17 individuals namely 16 rowers and 1 drummer. The rules of racing and the registration forms can be found in the downloads section.
This year, we are proud to announce the winners prize is the Xinhai Revolution Cup.
